NEWSLETTER - COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES (Week of 7 Mar 2022)

Greetings Graftonites,

As you know, Storm Eunice caused some damage to walls and fences on court 8. A temporary fence has now been erected to try to stop tennis balls disappearing into the allotment behind court 8. Please bear with us while we are investigating a possible insurance claim before permanent walls and fences can be erected.

In other maintenance news, this Saturday the men's changing rooms / showers / toilets will be closed in the morning and early afternoon for a deep clean. The ladies' toilet facilities will have to be used for communal use on this temporary basis.

SQUASH MEMBERS MEETING (Weds 16 March 8-9 pm)

There will be a squash members open meeting on Weds 16 March from 8-9 pm at the club. Please attend if you would like your voice to be heard, or simply want to be kept up to date with developments.

Squash at the Grafton is in a very good place with ca. 240 members, a waiting list for the first time in living memory and our first ever professional coach, Marco Spinola. Success brings with it various challenges including pressures on court bookings, and there is also the possibility of carrying out some major changes to the Squash Courts building over the next 6-18 months. To ensure that change and options moving forward best reflect the views of the members, and following replies to the Comms request for help two weeks ago, we have put together a Squash Working Group to steer the club during this period. The group and other committee members will be on hand to give you an overview of potential new initiatives and to answer your questions and seek your views. Please do come along!!!

GRAFTON LADIES' SQUASH COMPETITION

Two Saturdays ago saw the revival of the Grafton Ladies' Closed Squash Competition since it was last played in 1990, organised by our head squash coach Marco. There were 8 entries divided up into groups of 4 for an initial round robin. Then there was a playoff phase to determine the ranking of all the players. In all there were 20 matches played corresponding to each player playing 5 matches!

After some great squash we had a winner – Alice Coxeter, who beat Sarah Caswell in the final. All the ladies enjoyed the day and are looking forward to more ladies' squash events!

FUN SQUASH TOURNAMENTS (Sat 19 March 2-4.30 pm)

Although the courts are being heavily used at the moment, Saturday afternoons remain quiet. We want to build on the success of the Ladies' Squash Closed by running other fun events for all standards on Saturday afternoons (probably ca. monthly). The first of these is set for Saturday 19 March @ 2pm and can accommodate up to 15 players. If you want to take part, please email Graeme (graeme.hogarth@kcl.ac.uk). If numbers look OK we will set up a ”tournament” on MyCourts. Entry is £3.50. If successful, then another is planned for Saturday 9th April.
