NEWSLETTER - A Royal Start to the Year (Week of 7 January 2019)

Greetings Graftonites:

People really took to heart the idea of Grafton-themed New Year resolutions, as we can see from this week's wide-ranging bulletin:

- REAL TENNIS
- HANDICAP FINALS
- RACKETBALL / SQUASH 57
- CLAY COURT SERVICE
- DATES FOR YOUR DIARY

***If you wish to put an announcement in next Monday’s broadcast, the only way to do so is by sending your broadcast to graftoncomms@gmail.com by Friday 6pm.

REAL TENNIS (Sat 23 Feb)

You may have already seen this on The Chronicle or on Facebook, but this is just too good to pass up, and so we will echo the notice in the Newsletter too. We are proud to have an England Real Tennis international in our midst, Simon Barker, who has very kindly arranged a session for us to
follow in Henry VIII’s footsteps and have a go at Real Tennis at Hampton Court Palace!!!

Date: Saturday 23 Feb 2019
Time: 7pm onwards
Cost: £20 per head
Numbers: maximum of 12 people, first come first served:
Food : Pizzas included
Drinks : Available from the members' bar

You'll get an one hour to watch resident players at work followed by as much time on court afterwards as you want. Rackets and balls supplied.

Please wear predominantly white clothing.

To take advantage of this privileged opportunity apply to Simon directly at Barkersofbalham@btinternet.com

A fantastic evening, in a setting fit for royals. Places are extremely limited so get typing that e-mail ASAP!!!

HANDICAP FINALS (Sun 20 Jan from 6pm)

The 2018/9 Handicap Finals will take place during club night. At 6pm we have the plate final between two of our juniors, Gabriel Bowen and Vivian Hogarth. This is followed by the main final at 6.30pm between Othman Hack and Graeme Hogarth.

I hope that you can attend club night, get some games in and also watch these matches. There's also an outside chance of cheap drinks at the bar on the night.

RACKETBALL / SQUASH 57

Here’s a new idea for the new year: we are very keen to establish Racketball (or Squash 57 to use its official name) at the Club. We emphasise that this is for ALL members: tennis and squash. It’s a great way to improve fitness, not too demanding, lots of fun and of course can be played even if adverse weather keeps you inside.

Here is a video intro:

The plan is to have an introductory session with a Squash 57 expert from Surrey Squash, likely on a Friday from 7pm-9pm. We hope to then run regular weekly social sessions (Sundays at around midday?). If it takes off we can run box leagues, tournaments, championships... the world is our oyster!!!

Social sessions will cost £2.50 for lights and on-going people will need to pay £5 (£2.50 each) for 45mins lights.

The good news is there's no charge for loan of rackets/balls (we have 2/3 in cupboard by court 3). Initially people can borrow equipment for free, game by game, until you commit and get your own.

So please express interest or if you have any further questions:

Or sign up in the folder behind the bar.

CLAY COURT SERVICE (Wed 9 Jan)

We’re delighted that the new courts are proving so popular. We have a contract with a servicing company and their first visit will be this Wednesday. They will check the carpet, re-distribute/add clay as necessary etc to ensure that the courts play as well as possible. Courts should be playable from around 4pm onwards.

Also the benches for kit are imminent so please do use them once they become available!
