NEWSLETTER- Winter Tournaments Bonanza (week of 3/10/16)

Greetings Graftonites, The days may be getting darker, but we have plenty of new activity buzzing around Grafton. Please note the tight deadlines for some of these entries, as you will see in this week's notices: - WINTER MIXED ENTRIES NOW OPEN - FIRST WINTER HANDICAP TENNIS TOURNAMENT - REMEMBER TO OPT-IN - SUPER SOCIAL TENNIS - DATES FOR YOUR DIARY Please scroll to the bottom of this message to read the full write-up for these notices. ***If you wish to put an announcement in next Monday’s broadcast, please send your request to graftoncomms@gmail.com by next Friday.*** Thanks. WINTER MIXED ENTRIES NOW OPEN! As we start to sweep leaves off the courts and try to find our tracksuits, it's time to invite entries for the 2016/17 Winter Mixed! In response to feedback we received about last year's tournament, this time we will have a two separate tournaments- Level A and Level B so when you enter please request A or B. We are hopeful this will encourage even more entries. Besides that, much the same format as last year: Round robin groups. All play 28 Oct- 28 Feb Followed by quarters (Cup/Plate/Saucer) then semis/finals (dates tbc) Enter via graftonwintermixed@gmail.com £5 per pair to folder Deadline for entries 17 Oct So grab your partners, and let's keep the courts busy and repeat the success of last Winter! FIRST WINTER HANDICAP TOURNAMENT We are also pleased to announce that we will be running a singles tournament alongside the Winter Mixed. In the same spirit of it being anybody's tournament to win, this will be a Handicap Tournament. Completely different from any tournament we've had before and a chance for anyone to achieve Grafton glory. How will it work? Based on your current league position you will be allocated a handicap score. You will start EVERY GAME with this score. These will be confirmed in due course, but we're thinking players in Leagues 17-19 should start all games +30, Leagues 14-16 at +15, Leagues 11-13 at 0 and so on until you get to League 1 players who will have to overcome a handicap of -50 or worse! So in theory a player from the lower leagues need only win two points per game to take out the big guns from the top of the table. Crucially there will be NO SEEDINGS, since this should be taken care of with the handicap system. This style of tournament is also designed with every player in mind so we will only be having one mixed tournament (as opposed to men's and ladies' separately). It will be a standard knockout tournament (alas no plate competition), with rounds leading up to the Winter Finals Day (deadlines tbc). Matches should be the same format as the leagues (2 tie-break sets, with the option of a third or a champions tiebreak if 1-1). We expect there to be a high number of entries, so there may be some short deadlines but matches should be quick... so there's no excuse not to squeeze them in! What do you do need to do next? If you're already in the leagues - nothing. We will automatically enter you (for free) and allocate a handicap. You will then be notified of the draw when it has been made. If you are in the leagues, but do NOT want to play, please contact graftonhandicap@gmail.com to withdraw. If you are not currently in the leagues, but fancy giving it a go, please also contact graftonhandicap@gmail.com or sign up behind the bar. Deadline for entries or withdrawals will be Monday 17 October. Look out for more information over the next month! OPT-IN REMINDER A gentle reminder to please "opt-in"! This should be on everyone's to-do list! If you remember from last week, the LTA kindly provides Grafton with a given number of tickets for the Championships. We then run an internal ballot and allocate them to our lucky winners. The only way in which you can be considered for our internal lottery is if you "opt-in" on the below link: https://www.lta.org.uk/major-events/grand-slams/wimbledon/ballots/ So please, "opt-in". While this does not guarantee you tickets to Wimbledon, the more people "opt-in" then the more Wimbledon tickets will be allocated to Grafton, and the better your odds! Please contact graftonwimbledonballot@gmail.com for more info. SUPER SOCIAL TENNIS The clocks go back 29 Oct so come along to a ' super-social' session as a last stand before the dark months descend upon us. Fix fours or just mix in from 1200 TEA. CAKES. BAR!
