COURTS RESURFACING- THE CHOICE IS YOURS!!!
We're delighted to announce that the uptake of the recent Long Term Membership offers has been such that we're in the position to start the process of organising the resurfacing work for tennis courts 5-8. (Note: The funding of this work, regardless of the option chosen, won't affect the annual review of membership fees.)

With these courts now in need of fairly urgent resurfacing work, this not only represents a significant investment for the Club, but more importantly, an opportunity for our members to make the choice as to the type of surface we invest in.

In order to ensure we give everyone an equal say we're opening a vote for all tennis and tennis & squash members to register their preference of surface. Over the course of the coming week a ballot box will be placed on the bar in the clubhouse. The ballot box will remain open until early March, after which we will announce the result.

Your vote's critical. Your vote counts. It'll help determine the playing surface for the next 10-15 years!

Below you'll find some info on the surface choices available, with consideration to our budget. Having finalised the budget and discussed options with various contractors, the Committee has narrowed our choice of surface down to:
a) Artificial Clay
b) Tarmac (resurface)

Herewith is our best summary of the key facts along with the pros and cons of each option:

A . ARTIFICIAL CLAY
Description:  Carpet laid on tarmac and in-filled with ceramic-coated sand

Cost:  £90k inc VAT approx £3K per year maintenance
Life: Estimated 15 years
Surface/bounce: slightly slower/lower than tarmac
Cold / Wet Weather Performance: Relatively Frost-resistant / Less slippery than Tarmac when wet
Other Considerations:
A choice of surfaces is now the norm for most tennis clubs
A choice of surface will become more critical in retaining and attracting new members
Softer surface that's easier on joints
Good surface for coaching
Increased yearly costs covered through modest increase of 10-15 new memberships
Players need to drag/sweep the courts/lines after each match
Players need to brush shoes to remove clay on special brushes outside courts.

B. TARMAC
Description: Renewal of the surface we currently have in place.
Cost: 45k inc VAT approx. £500 per year cleaning / £3K every 5 years for repainting
Life: Estimated 10 years
Surface/bounce:  High bounce
Cold / Wet Weather Performance. Slow to defrost.
Other Considerations:
Looking ahead, other surfaces can be laid over (even/level) tarmac
Can be stressful on joints

If you'd like any more info please do contact Murray S, Tony B or Tim B. Thanks in advance for you vote – we look forward to sharing the results.

A truly massive thank you to all who made this possible by taking up long term memberships, making donations and offering up loans!

With the floodlight project now also fully funded and underway, and the recent upgrade to the squash heating, these are exciting times for our Club!!!

OPEN DAY VOLUNTEERS NEEDED - Sat 24th March 9-3pm.
It'd be great to get members to help out again on the day, so we need some volunteers. Last year we had plenty of volunteers and it was a big success for both tennis and squash. If you helped out before it'd be great if you could do it again, please. New volunteers very welcome too!

Please email shoneyball@channel4.co.ukif you would like to help out on the day.

BEWARE WET PAINT(week of 12 Feb)
The school will be painting the clubhouse interior and the ladies' changing rooms, as well as doing some work to the back room this half term week. Disruption should be minimal, but thanks for your understanding while our lives are brightened....

BOOKINGS REMINDER
A reminder that tennis courts can't be booked for more than 2 hours at a time. You can't, for example, book the evening courts from 7pm-10pm. If for whatever reason you do need a 3 hour slot (for example for a Surrey knockouts match, which therefore must be completed on that day) then please contact graftoncomms@gmail.com and we can book the court for you accordingly. Equally, please cancel your booking as soon as you know that you no longer need it. Thanks.
