THE RULE OF 6 - IMPORTANT

Many of you will have seen that as of today the law relating to gathering inside and outside has changed. In order to limit the spread of Covid-19 all members are now only permitted to gather in fixed groups of 6.

The following club rules will now apply:

When seating on the patio area there is now a strict limit of 2 people per bench.

Tables and benches have been placed further apart. DO NOT move them closer together or seek to increase the number of seating places around a table.

Once seated at a table, keep to that table for the duration of your session. Switching between tables is not permitted.

Social distancing is a must, not a choice, and should be maintained at all times.

Frequent use of hand sanitiser is imperative.

We ask all members to remember we're visible to our neighbours. Any complaints relating to non-observance of the above could be treated as a breach of the law.

Note: The LTA have advised that the sporting aspect of tennis related team practice nights, and socials tennis are not affected by these changes to the law. There has been no update by Squash England as yet.

We are at present performing a Covid-19 risk assessment relating to the indoor bar areas, as well as finalising plans for the refurbishment to the clubhouse. An update on this will be sent out ASAP.

WOMEN'S SQUASH WEEK (21-27 Sept)

Squash England have made 21-27th September Women's Squash Week . The aim of this is to both encourage female participation in our sport and to celebrate our female players.
For this event the club has agreed to:
(i) waive the lights fee for any two women playing each other - please contact Graeme by email AFTER you have played and we will reimburse the £5 fee;
(ii) allow access to the courts to female Tennis-only members so they can give squash a go or reacquaint themselves with the game, rackets will be provided, Graeme to help with court bookings
(iii) Harry and Graeme have agreed to offer free coaching to any female Grafton member on Saturday 26th September from 2-5 pm.

=> If you want to be paired up with a partner or attend the free coaching session then please email Graeme Hogarth.

LADIES' TEAM TENNIS IS BACK

Ladies - are you interested in playing team tennis? October is (as it stands) due to see the return of inter-club team tennis for the winter season. Grafton has 1st, 2nd, 3rd and midweek ladies teams, which all compete in the Wilson Surrey ladies doubles Leagues. We are currently waiting on the final guidance from the organisers including COVID guidelines to ensure matches are played safely.

Whilst we wait, particularly given the influx of new members as well as the sad departure of some old faithfuls, we wanted to reach out to all the ladies and see who would be interested in playing before we set the squads later in September.

Each team usually has a match a month which takes around 4 hours (plus travel time for away matches). In each match, four players (two pairs) play two doubles matches - best of two sets with a championship tiebreak decider.

To express your interest, please join the ladies night WhatsApp group at:

ttps://chat.whatsapp.com/KPm4w2OELxLKYY2vG3NZ9i and let us know by Friday 18th September .
Alternatively, make sure you have let one of the captains know by then - Morvern Scott (Firsts), Louise Wilson (Seconds), Julie Davison/Wilson (Thirds), Mary Prickett (Midweek).
If we have a lot of interest, we can potentially look to adding a new team next season!

MEN'S TEAM TENNIS IS BACK

From October, the Surrey Leagues returns, which gives the Grafton members the chance to play other clubs.

With so many members now, the men’s team captains are struggling to keep up with the newbies.

So, captains of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd team are holding an open tennis session for anyone interested in playing club tennis.

Saturday 26th September, 3pm.

Current men’s Team positions in Surrey Leagues:

Men’s Firsts League 7
Men’s Seconds League 8
Men’s Thirds League 15

We’ll then pick squads for the winter campaign.

Hopefully See You There!

SQUASH BUBBLES

The first iteration of the squash bubbles have now been set up and can be viewed on the MyCourts website. If you have not been included but had asked to be, then please email Graeme Hogarth again. There is some room for new players and new bubbles can also be created, so do go ahead and email Graeme Hogarth if you want to be included.

A reminder - YOU CAN ONLY PLAY GAMES WITH THOSE IN YOUR BUBBLE . You can do drills and play sides with others. If you are in the same household then you do not need to be in a bubble. The club has a responsibility to control this so if you are playing someone in full games and have not let us know then please do so as soon as possible. We do not have to set up the bubble as a league but we do need the information for Track and Trace.

The bubbles are not leagues, so there is no promotion or relegation, but you are welcome to add scores in the usual way. The eagle-eyed amongst us will have seen that Squash England relaxed the mandatory wearing of googles to be advisory.

WORLD SQUASH DAY (Saturday 10th October)

Another Squash England initiative is World Squash Day on Saturday 10th October. If you have any ideas of how we can effectively engage with this under the current COVID-19 restrictions then please email Graeme Hogarth.

BAMBOO ROOT WORK

This is starting shortly for a few days. As a result the path along court 4 will be inaccessible so please access top courts via court 5 gate. We need to stop the bamboo damaging court 4. Thanks.
