GRAFTON CHARITY CUP JUNE 11

Dear Grafton Member, This message is to invite you to enter a new one-day tournament we are organising for the afternoon of Saturday June 11th, which will be called the Grafton Charity Cup. There will be a total of three competitions you can choose from, those being the men’s doubles, the women’s doubles and the mixed doubles. There will be eight teams in each competition, with all the teams divided into groups of four. There will be a group stage in which all the teams in each group play one another. This will be followed by the top two in each group going into the knockout stage of the main draw, and the third and fourth placed teams going into the plate, meaning everyone is guaranteed at least four sets of tennis. The competition will start just after midday, and we anticipate it finishing around six. We also plan to lay on a barbecue and the bar will offer the usual extraordinary range of fine wines, beers and spirits. The intention is to provide a great day’s tennis in a format slightly different to the club’s existing tournaments. There is also a separate aspect, which is to raise funds for charity. My sister-in-law recently passed on after a fight against cancer, and we hope to raise at least a thousand pounds for the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation, which funds research and trials for the early detection of cancer and new anti-cancer treatments. The club’s management has kindly agreed to allow the facilities to be used for the event, and all profits from the day will go to this organisation. To this end, we are asking all those who enter to pay ten pounds, all of which will go to this charity, as well as encouraging others to donate a similar amount. If you wish to enter, please send an email to graftoncharitycup@gmail.com. You should give your name, the email address at which you wish to be contacted, and state which specific competition(s) you wish to enter in order of preference. If there is only one tournament you wish to enter you don’t need to put a second preference. If there is someone with whom you have arranged to play then please state this, but I am happy to pair you with someone else if you do not yet have a partner. So if you have a partner, and you wish to enter the women’s doubles, but you would be happy to play in the mixed if all the spaces are taken. If so, you should draft the email in the following way: Name: Serena Williams Email: serenagrandslamwilliams@gmail.com 1 Women’s doubles (with Venus Williams) 2 Mixed doubles It would be helpful if you could provide your partner’s email as well. The tournament will be organised in the same spirit as all of the Grafton’s events. Players of all levels are welcome, and the day should see equal quantities of great tennis and great laughs. I very much look forward to receiving your entries. Best wishes, Stephen Grant
